~Shock: In my assignment I would also like to create a shock affect by giving examples of hate crimes.
~Persuade: I would like to persuade my audience to vote in favor for the Matthew Shepard Act

~Thoughts: I want my audience to perceive how cruel these acts of hate are, and how the Matthew Shepard Act would be able to help individuals that may endure the misfortune of a hate crime.
~Feelings: I would like for my audience to feel disturbed by the information that I present to them, but motivated to take action and vote in favor of the Matthew Shepard Act.
~Actions: Along with my other goals, I want my audience to encourage others who may be against the act to vote in favor of it.

Genre

Judy gives speeches, writes letters, and visits various communities in order to educate everyone of hate crimes and the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act

Do you think that a hand written letter is more effective than a typed letter? Why?
What important points should I incorporate in my letter?

Proposal #3 gay rights

For my 3rd project I want to do something that can get those we encounter on a daily basis involved. Setting a table up in free speech alley may not be the most efficient way, because most just walk past avoiding eye contact.. or at least I do. I was thinking about having like a pamphlet or something with a few topics I discussed in my first 2 projects. My focus is gay rights which from what I have noticed is not something many people address in free speech alley. I was considering using my creativity with something like bracelets that we can sell/give away either one. I think this would draw a little more attention if people get something out of talking to me. On the other hand, I am not sure how I can incorporate writing. Maybe a survey or something simple.

What do you think would be an efficient way to get peoples opinions, survey..etc.?
Do you think the bracelets are a good idea?
and if not, do you have any ideas that would help.

Proposal #3 - Abortion debate

Proposal #3:

Topic: Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life. The deeper truths of the debate.

Genre: ?

Writer: As a nineteen year old at LSU, and also as a woman this topic has become very personal for me and i want to use these characteristics to capture my audience's thoughts and see how they feel.

Audience: Students. I want to reach out to LSU students who take interest in the debate. Students that are pro-choice advocates will better appreciate my thoughts.

Purpose: I want to show all "truths" to my audience about the pro-choice side of things. I want them to have a better understanding of what they really stand for after reading this paper. Not because of the bias i push or what other may think, but that they question the extent of their beliefs.

This is only one option if how i will write project 3. I have left genre open for your ideas. What genre do you think would fit best? What other suggestions for this paper do you have, specifically on purpose? Considering this debate and how most know quite a lot about it, what would catch your attention?

Interesting Article

LSU Chancellor Michael Martin told the LSU community Wednesday that he prefers the short-term approach of forcing employees to take time off without pay over a layoff plan.

But the budget still needs to be cut. “If we can’t furlough, we’ll lay more people off,” he said.

In addition, a 5 percent tuition increase and possibly other student fee increases will be necessary to preserve LSU’s “academic core,” Martin told staff and students during multiple forums throughout the day.

LSU faculty groups have adamantly opposed allowing Martin to impose a proposed policy that would allow for employee furloughs without declaring a financial emergency, or exigency.

Faculty contend a broader furlough policy would give chancellors too much power to force employees to take unpaid leave whenever times are financially tough.

“We’d be better off if we have a furlough system to save jobs if we think this (recession) is short term,” Martin told students during a lunchtime forum.

Declaring financial exigency could lead to both furloughs and massive layoffs, he said, explaining that he does not want to “open that door.”

“I have to believe — because I’m a pathological optimist — that we will grow ourselves out of this,” Martin said during an afternoon faculty forum.

LSU also is looking into the possibility of employee “deferrals of payments,” Martin said, that would set aside a small portion of salaries to be paid at a later time when the economy improves.

Martin said LSU likely will “tax athletics” and use some of the Southeastern Conference’s funds from its new ESPN football contract to cushion the cuts.

Officially, LSU’s flagship Baton Rouge campus is looking at a proposed $35 million cut, or 15 percent of its state appropriations. But Martin contends it is really $50 million when a $10 million cut from January is counted and another $5 million in unfunded mandates from increased insurance and benefits costs are included.

LSU’s total budget – counting tuition revenue and federal funding – is about $450 million.

“A cut that large would be devastating to this institution,” Martin said. Roughly 80 percent of LSU’s budget is dedicated to personnel, Martin said, so people will be impacted.

A poorly rated flagship university is a “curse” on the whole state, he said.

Martin said LSU can either “spread the pain” of cuts or target specific academic units to eliminate. Regardless, he said, the cuts will protect LSU’s academic strengths and not be made “across the board.”

Did you know that the Budget Cuts would cause all of these effects?

Are you finally realizing how bad these cuts are for the University?

LA Wetlands Proposal #3

At this stage in the thrid project I am having trouble deciding in which genre I would like to write. My first paper was an exploratory essay and my second was a satire/parody and argumentative/persuasion. I researched extensively for these first two projects and learned so much about the wetlands and because of the amount of various articles, columns, and scientific essays I have accumulated, my first thought was to write in a reflexive analysis genre for my third essay. It seems the most obvious because after I have discovered so much in the first two essays I could now be able to write strictly for myself and how I feel on such a major issue in the world today. My problem with this genre is that I'm afraid it might come across as a little boring. For my third project I initially wanted to write something of more impact but now I am confused because I am unsure of which genre would have the "aha moment" I am looking for.

Other than reflexive analysis, which genre do you like would best suit my third project? (Remember I want something that leaves an impression on the reader.)

Another thought for my third essay would be to greatly narrow my audience and pick a much smaller issue within the Louisiana wetlands to write about. For example, I could want my audience to be only Louisiana politicians and write about their views on the wetlands. Another group of people could be fisherman who use the wetlands for their sport. Possible sub-topics could how things such as climate change effects the wetlands or only discussing what is currently being done to restore them.

Do you think this is a better way to approach my third project? I really like the defined aspect of writing in this idea, do you agree?

Project 3 Rough Proposal

Topic: The topic that I will use to write my final essay on this semester is the separation of church and state.

Writer: The separation of church and state is a topic that I enjoy researching, and writing about. Having the privilege to learn in public and private schools during my life time has taught me that this issue has become a serious problem. I am a firm believer in God, and I think it s a real problem if we cannot express religion in school, no matter what religion that may be.

Purpose: The purpose of this essay will be able to express to my audience the negative aspects this phrase brings on our country. I have yet to decide who I want my audience to be in this upcoming paper, but I would like to explain to them my personal opinion about the separation of church and state and let the reader come up with his or her own conclusion.

Genre: The genre that I think I will choose is the reflection. I have already written an exploratory, as well as a persuasive. In this paper I think I would like to reflect on all that I have learned about my topic.

I have yet to decide as to who would be the best audience to write my reflection essay toward. Any suggestions as to who I should write my essay to?

Born into Debt!

I found this article very interesting in that, it explains about how much each person living in the US is debt to, due to the governments generous spending. The Article states that every new born in the US automatically is in debt to about $22,000 dollars. And that number may grow to more than $51,000 by 2019. I find it to be crazy that though we are already in debt, we are will handing out money to company's(AIG) that in turn give out tax payer money as bonuses. Or how big corporations are receiving all the help while the average small business suffers. Rather than spending more money we should be using money to pay down the already large debt the country has. If this spending continues, before we know if this country will be run by foreign investors.

What do you think about every new born automatically being in debt?

Are all these bailouts, and other money spending, good in the long run?

Project 3 Proposal- Haiti

What I am hoping for this last project is to persuade people to donate and raise money/awarness for the people in Haiti. The very first time I ever heard about what was going on in Haiti was from the organization, "Food for the Poor Inc". They are raising donations and educating people all around the world about the issues Haiti faces. Therefore, I might use this somehow in my project, but I'm not quite sure how yet. I'm thinking I will try to persuade my audience to donate to this organization. Also, I might suggest that there are so many other organizations you can donate to that are trying to help many different countries in need.

My audience will be to my family because I think it would be really cool to raise money with my whole family for Haiti. I will try to inform them of what is going on and why it is important to help these people living in poverty and a devestating enviornment. My goal is that my family members will get really involved and get their friends to donate as well. Also, my action for this project will hopefully be going out and raising money to donate to "Food for the Poor Inc".

Questions:
What else do you think I should add in my project to make it successful?
Do you think my ideas are good enough for a well done project? Do you think there will be people who will donate and raise money for Haiti?

Project 2- Proposal

Project 2 was in the format of a magazine article and focused on the scientific aspects of how beneficial music education is.  For this project, I want to approach music in a more personal way.  Hopefully this proposal correlates with that idea:

Topic:  After doing some research, I have decided to write my third essay on how music changes people’s lives.  It will be different from my previous essays in that it will include personal narratives (not my own) and less of science and statistics.  I will be speaking less of how music is beneficial in education and more of how music affects people’s lives.

Writer: While my personal story with music is not how it saved me from a dark time, music has indeed changed the direction my life has taken.  Without it, I have no idea of the person I would be and music has helped me in my life and I know music affects others as well.

Audience:  The audience for this paper will be broad.  Anyone who wants to read about my topic is welcomed to.

Purpose:  To show people how music plays such a vital role in everyday life and hopefully inspire people to participate in the arts, whether it is pursuing instruction in music or simply attending local concerts.

Genre: I’m not really sure of the specific genre of this essay.  It will probably be in the realm of a narrative.  I might try and use “characters” (people that I have researched about and seen how music changed their lives).  It might be a narrative where I am simply an observer into my subjects (the characters from the previous sentence).  I’m not quite sure yet.

Questions:

Is there another genre that you think might work for this?

Do you think it is too idealistic to believe I can write a whole paper on people’s individual experiences with music? Is it too unrealistic?

Project 3 Idea

For my second project, I did an expose’ of the welfare system and how it affects children. For project three, I want to do something that will make a difference in the lives of the children I observed. I have decided to create a pamphlet to send home with the children that includes tips for maximizing their education. It won’t be anything elaborate, just two pages or so of quick tips with clipart and fun facts.

My goal with this project is to try to carry the values and lessons the children learn at school to their homes. The tips I will include will hopefully encourage parents and their children to be “on the same page” when it comes to matters of education and development.

I think that sending this letter to the parents is a way to raise awareness for those who need to hear it the most. There is a chance that if parents read these simple tips, they will be inspired to spend more time participating and encouraging their child’s education.

Do you have any suggestions about tips or facts to include?

Do you think this will reach the parents on a level that will make a change?

If you were a parent, what would a letter like this need to have in order to catch your attention?

Project #3 possibility...

For my past two projects, the focus has been somewhat of a broad sense concerning women's rights. In the next project I feel like I want my focus to be on the rights granted to everyone by the Constitution and how freely we actually are able to exercise these rights.

WRITER: I want to write about this topic because I feel that if we are to be granted certain rights, we should not be penalized for exercising them (ex: freedom of speech, in some cases). Some are affected more by others, but this topic interest me and I would enjoy writing about it.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to inform people and make them aware of their limitations. Also, to possibly present new amendments (i.e. drinking age).

I feel that this is an important topic because many people, including myself, bypass things like this and let it go without a fight.

This is still a rough draft and subject to change, so I wanted to see what the feedback from some of you would turn out to be.

Just leave any comments or concerns! Is this a good idea, or do you have any pointers?

Proposal # 3-Louisiana Wetlands

For my second paper, I wrote about the New Orleans levee system and how it has failed to give the city the protection it needs. My purpose was to convince residents that the wetlands are a better form of hurricane protection and more money should be dedicated to restoring them instead of building new levees. For my third paper, I want to inform people on the simple everyday things they can be doing to help protect our wetlands . I also want to bring some attention to the many organizations out there that are dedicated to raising money for numerous wetland restoration projects. My audience will again be the residents of New Orleans and surrounding areas because they are affected most by this epidemic. I haven't decided on a genre yet and I'm still thinking of changing the purpose of the paper a little depending on how much research i'll be able to come up with.

Any suggestions for a genre?

Do you think the purpose/topic is broad enough?

Nancy Pelosi On Abortion

Nancy Pelosi, the United States Speaker of the House, explains that she is a practicing Catholic and that the Catholic Church has never defined when life begins. This is such a wrong statement. The Catholic Church has always stated life begins at conception, not question asked. The question I am asking is not your stance on abortion, but can Nancy Pelosi still be credible when stating such a false statement. She obviously can’t be a true practicing Catholic and be and adamant pro-choice supporter at the same time because it’s like oil and water. Is she just saying what she wants her constituents to here? Or is she obviously just lying about being a practicing Catholic? What do you think about what she said and do you have any more comments on this situation with Pelosi?

First video is Nancy Pelosi’s initial comments and the second is the Church’s and some Republicans reactions to her comments and their attempt to express the Church’s real stance on when life begins.

Proposal #3

As everyone knows project #3 has a take action component. I have been thinking of what I would like to do in terms of getting the community involved, but so far I really do not know what I want to do. My topic is centered on gender issues in sports. My first project was an “ask Kathryn” article about issues in youth sports and my second project was a history of the beginning of women’s sports with key role models in the fight for equality in women’s sports. Below is a very rough proposal of project three.

Topic: Gender inequality in sports. This will focus on the history of title IX and how schools are still struggling to comply with this law.

Writer: After all the research about women and sports that I have done I have made an opinion on the issues at hand and want other people to understand where I stand as a college student majoring in sports administration because it directly affects me and my employment opportunities

Genre:

Audience:

I have left genre and audience blank because I would like opinions on which audience I should focus writing this paper too and how should I get my point and opinions across to that audience.

Another question that I have is how should I get the community involved? What types of “take action” methods would be good for this type of issue?

Proposal #3 on Racism

Topic: Racism in the institutions of higher education. This includes "Affirmative Action" and reverse discrimination.

Writer: I am twenty years old and I have grown up surrounded by doctors and the issue of racism and reverse discrimination. This allows me to couple my personal experience with research.

Audience: I am writing to the heads of major higher education institutions that may or may not have been in a legal debate over "Affirmative Action".

Purpose: My purpose is to provide satire that will show how ridiculous some serious subjects can be. Also, I want the people in charge to be able to laugh at themselves and take a step back from their argument.

Genre: I have chosen to a parody and satire but this is still up for debate.

Context: The context will be in today's schools in today's society. This subject is very much alive today.

Do you think I can pull of a parody of "Affirmative Action" without offending anybody?

Project 3 Ideas

My topic will be on the same central focus of LGBT rights. In the past two projects I have focused more on introducing the problems and trying to relate how the discrimination affects everyone. I think for this project it will definitely be something different because I actually have to physically get involved and do something.

My audience will most probably be college aged kids since campus is where I will probably doing my actual physical project. Since campus is a great diversity of people and ages, I think it will be fairly easy to lure them into the topic and actually get some type of response/action from them. Even writing to them in my response will be fairly easy because everyone has feelings and it is easier to relate to someone who is closer in age. Also, being in the same environment we tend to see things the same way too.

For my genre, as of right now, I have only talked about actually selling bracelets with Amanda. So that will be my physical project, and I am thinking of writing a personal reflection as my writing on the experience. I think telling my perspective of how I did something so simple yet impacted a great number of people in a positive way will help my readers know that anyone can help and get involved. Hopefully my readers can relate to my feelings and understand that a little can go a long way.

The purpose of my actual project will be to get involved in informing of my two previous topics and the overall issue at hand. I talk about taking a stand and actually helping out, well this time I will actually be helping out! The purpose will be to get involved personally with the cause of spreading the word that discrimination against one group affects everyone.

My stance/position will be to try and be unbiased and see things from both sides of an argument if something is brought my way. However, I do have factors that affect my outlook on the situation. First off, I am young and at a time in my life where I am exploring options I have being an "informed" citizen of this country. I guess before I never kept up on citizens rights and lawful things such as those. Now as I get older I realize all these things are beginning to affect me, and I should be aware of what is going on and what my rights are. Secondly, I have friends who are lesbian/gay and just like any other straight friend; I love them and care about them. I hate to see them hurt just like I would any of my other friends. These all are factors that would sway my view/position of my paper. During my time on my physical project I will try my best to be as unbiased as possible.

**Do you think my genre/physical project is a good idea, or should I try something else?
**Do you think I should add something else to my physical project like telling my peers facts on the issue or is it fine how it is?

For Thursday

1. Read the excerpt from "Clan of the One-Breasted Woman" in the text.

2. Listen to Robert Krulwich talk to CalTech grads about storytelling.
It's 27 minutes long, so give yourself time...it should be an enjoyable listen, though.

3. Post something on the blog.
An article + discussion question, or a summary + questions for project #2, or a rough proposal + questions for project #3. Make it useful to you!

A quiz is not out of the question, so read/listen carefully, but no reader responses are necessary.

Got Measles?

The anti-vaccination movement began in response to the alleged vaccination-autism link. Due to vaccine anxiety many parents are opting out of routinely scheduled vaccinations. What happens when we choose not to vaccinate? One very real consequence of the anti-vaccination movement is a resurgence of certain diseases. Measles seem to be the most likely of any of these diseases. During January - April 2008 a total of 64 confirmed measles cases were reported to the Center for Disease Control in the United States, the highest number reported for any year since 2001. The source of similar outbreaks may be international transmission, as measles claim the lives of over 500 children each day across the globe. I can appreciate a program, like the Measles Initiative, dedicated to reducing measles deaths worldwide. Not only will this endeavor prove beneficial for the countries at greater risk of epidemic, but it will also reduce the likelihood of international transmission. With this everyone wins.

1. What other strategies may be implemented in providing a barrier for international transmission of deadly diseases?
2. Why do you believe it is important to prevent epidemics from gaining a foothold in less-developed countries?

Streamlined sentences

In the comments section below, please post the original sentence and your revised version. For example:

Original: Due to the fact that a number of arguments have been made about the topic of euthanasia, it is clear that the subject is a fairly controversial one.

My revision: Euthanasia is a complex topic.

That way, writers can see how their sentences were revised. Thanks!

Budget Cuts

In my last paper, I explored how budget cuts will affect students and asked them to stand up for a school that is uncut. In this paper, I will be exploring the ways that LSU officials are trying to save LSU's funding. I am going to obtain interviews from the Chancellor and the Dean of Students, and also look at our legislators that are trying to save funding for our school. This will be written for students, and the purpose will be to inform the students that there are people trying to save the schools funding. I think that when students hear about how some legislators and school officials are trying to ward off these cuts, the students will have a restored faith in the system.

My Questions are:

Do you think that our legislators are doing a good job trying to protect our funding?
Do you think LSU offficials are doing a good enough job trying to protect our funding?
Why or Why not?

The Separation of Chuch and State (First Essay)

The topic that I chose to do my written projects on this semester is the separation of church and state. The audience that I deemed was the most important were students of my age generation throughout the country. This topic is an issue that I feel really pertains to individuals my age group and slightly younger. The purpose I wanted out of my first essay was to explore the boundaries of the separation of church in state. In my paper I attempted to remind students on what our country was founded upon. I wanted to explore the foundation of our country where I could examine the similarities and the differences between other countries such as Holland, who has a very secular government, and countries such as the Middle East where they have government-mandated religions. In this paper I wanted to let the reader make his or her own judgment on how much separation is needed between church and state.

The Exploratory_Essay.doc

Should we or should we not be concerned about the separation of church and state?

Proposal 2: Reflection on Haiti

For this project, I'm planning on doing a reflective paper on the research I found from project 1. I'm going to let the audience know what I felt about the articles, what I think I should do about the problems in Haiti, my opinion about the US relationship with Haiti, and what touched me the most. I hope the readers can relate to my views and thoughts on the different issues Haiti faces. I'll explain what I remember most or I enjoyed most and articles that I didn't enjoy and thought were boring. My audience is going to be a group that is interested in helping and becoming more informed about the country Haiti. Also, my audience could be written to college students or adults. I hope that my audience read my annotated bibliography (project 1) before hand, so that they can also reflect on their opinions about the articles. My goal of this paper is to figure out what my true passion and opinion is on the poverty and economic problems in Haiti. Again, the genre will be reflective and hopefully allow the readers to reflect on what their dislikes and interests were from the articles they read.

Do you think this is enough detail for a proposal?
Does the genre allow me to achieve my goals?
Do you think the paper will be interesting enough to write or for the reader to read?

Draft of Proposal 2 : Cyberbullying

For my first project, I focused mainly on exploring the issue of cyber bullying. Because I am more aware of the problem that our society faces with cyber bullying, I want to focus on analyzing the different roles that children and their parents play

For this project, I plan on analyzing the different roles that children and their parents play. For this project, my genre will be an analysis yet it will not be reflective. Like most bullying, both parents and children and the relationship that they share with one another plays a vital role in how the child will handle it.

My audience will be the same as it was for the last projects: parents. I believe that parents often are naive with what’s going on with children until it is presented to them in a way that they understand. I also plan on trying to reach out to hopefully professionals who don’t necessarily know that much about cyber bullying.

My main purpose of my paper is to inform parents and hopefully professionals such as psychologists and therapists about the roles that both parents and children play in this new world of cyberspace. It is our jobs to protect the new generation who are essentially growing up in cyberspace.

Should I go more into detail about my proposal? Is the audience that I am trying to attract too vague? Is my topic too vague? Should I change the genre?

Proposal #2

For my project, I wrote about gender inequalities in youth sports. This time I want to write a biography on a female sports icon and her struggle to get her name (and sport) out there. I would like to add the history of what sports team in which she participated, and maybe a few other teams as well. The audience of this biography would be young girls everywhere to show them that their dreams can come true and that someone somewhere has already accomplished what they want to achieve. I have not quite decided on the genre yet, but I was thinking of doing a reflection on the athlete's life, from her point of view, and then add in what she thinks about women in athletics today. This part would have to be my opinion in her words, so really it would be my opinion.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a female athlete?

Do you think this could be an effective paper?

Does the genre work well in this situation?

Project #2 proposal draft: Proposition 8

Project one was very personal for me and in many ways helped me figure out what I could write about next. My sister, Sally, who I would do anything for is a lesbian. Sally may not plan/want to marry, but does she not deserve the same rights as anyone else? I am planning to do an exploratory/argumentative essay on Proposition 8. I know what most Americans know about the subject, and that is; California’s voting ballot on November 4, 2008 changed the state constitution by banning same-sex marriage. how does this affect those voting for proposition 8? Does it make their own relationships any less validated because those are allowed to choose who to spend their life with. Today in this day and age the divorce rate is higher than it’s ever been, people are crying out for the sanctity of marriage but its accepted for celebrities to marry for under 24 hours? To have such a joy of finally being able to take the one you love and stand in front of those who make your life complete and pledge to be theirs forever and then be told your promises are not significant. How is this fair?

· As a reader what would you like to know about proposition 8 and what questions might you have?
· I seem to get my personal opinions caught up in this topic a little too much, what are your opinions on proposition 8?
· Do you think that same-sex marriages will change the definition of marriage? Or only make it stronger?
· Lastly, if kids are taught that same-sex marriage is no different than traditional marriage would this make marriage seem less significant?

BLOG # 2, Hate Crimes (1st writing project)

The subject for my first writing project focused on hate crimes. The target audience I decided to focus on were hate groups, and those individuals who are in agreement with hate crimes. The purpose was to inform groups of their immoral actions, and to create as shock effect by enlightening my target audience of the dangers and consequences of their intended acts. The primary purpose was to persuade my audience to discontinue their acts of violence and hate.
I began my writing assignment with rhetorical questions. By using the rhetorical questions, I created the illusion that the speaker (me) was actually on their side. I started by asking, “Blacks. Whites. Jews. Homosexuals. Catholics. Immigrants. Do any of these genders religions or race fill you with hate? Do you hate the sight or thought of them? Do you hate when they DARE to be in your presence?” The purpose of the rhetorical questions was to get the audience’s attention. I really wanted the audience to listen to me. Calling them names or saying every action they did was wrong would cause them to ignore my every word. Therefore, I took a different approach. As my writing progressed my goal was to make their attention increase, while my points to so say understand them decreased. After capturing the audience’s attention, I gave them reasons to continue listening to me. I started by understanding their motives. After connecting with them I began my transition. I informed them of possible consequences if they continue down their road of hate. I ended that portion of my paper by defining a few terms that would be used throughout my assignment. (hate, hate crime, hate group) My next goal was to make aware present conditions, by telling the story of a black man who was chained to a truck and dragged to his death. Throughout my assignment, I also incorporate multiple quotes from Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was an inspirational leader who believed in nonviolent protests to achieve social change. Toward the end of my paper I proposed a solution to stop hate crimes. I stated positive effects that would occur if the solution was carried out. I also stated the negative effects that would occur if the solution was ignored.

Do you think that this was an effective way to persuade my audience? Why?

Effects of Welfare on Children: Propsal 2 Draft

My main focus in this semester is on the effects being on welfare has on children. My first project was an exploratory/informative essay which delved into the specifics of the United States welfare system. It included the necessary facts about how the system works, a brief history, and some startling statistics about the correlation between children’s participation in welfare and their performance in school (based on their parents’ employment, their attendance, and their work-ethic, etc.). For my next project, I want to take it one step further and potentially do a sort of expose’. My mother works as a kindergarten teacher at a public school here in Baton Rouge, and I am considering doing a piece which contains classroom observation, teacher and student interviews, and of course more supporting research.

As for audience, I mentioned in my last proposal that it includes anyone who will read it. This is because this problem, like many others in the class, affects the entire community. I am planning on taking a more journalistic approach for this project, so perhaps the audience could be narrowed down to those who would be reading a magazine or reader’s digest-type publication.

The purpose of my expose’ is not to hammer down on those who participate in the welfare system. Instead it will take examples from their lives and apply them to the welfare weaknesses I outlined in project one. It will be a factual documentation that will either support or disprove my questioning of the detrimental effects of welfare.

Do you think the expose’ genre comes across as too accusatory?

Does this sound like an article you would stop and read if it caught your attention?

Blog #2, Career Women Face Less Money, Less Marriage

http://abcnews.go.com/Business/CareerManagement/Story?id=2395758&page=1

The article I chose is regarding the wage gap among men and women. In one part it said that women make 77 ¢ for every dollar that a man makes. Women over the age of 25 with bachelor's degrees make approximately $6000 more than the men who have simply just graduated from high school($42,173 for the women, $36, 372 for the men), compared to those men who are of the same age with a bachelor's degree that make $60,071 salary. Obviously graduating from college is beneficial in a situation like this, but it also seems that being male is just as beneficial. A man who isn't even nearly as educated as a woman graduated from college can make almost the same amount as she, and when he does have that degree, he makes a lot more. It also says in this article that some believe that "you shouldn't marry a career woman" because most marriages that contain a career woman end in divorce. Contradicting this statement was Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority, saying that research shows that women who do earn money in the family have more stable marriages than the ones that don't.

Do you think that it is unfair that men typically earn more money than women? Why do you think that men do often times make more money than women?

Do you agree or disagree when they say that marriages with a career woman often fail? Why or why not?

Proposal #2 on Racism

The topic of my discussion is racism and how it has affected society in the past, present, and future.

I, the writer, am a twenty year old male who has grown in up in a wealthy, conservative family.  We went to church every Sunday, and my Christian faith is still an important part in my life today.  I attended public schools until I reached middle school where I began to attend a prominent private school.  After listing these traits, it may seem that racism would not even be a problem for me, but growing up in the south in Chattanooga, Tennessee has exposed me to many forms of racism.  I have witnessed racism pertaining to both sex and race on a broad level and a very close, personal level.  Also, I have seen that racism is not one-sided, but rather it can be used to have great effect toward both sides.  My experience pertains to people on a personal level and a scholastic level concerning my family members.  I also plan to research how racism has had an effect on employees and businesses nationwide.  I feel like my personal experiences and beliefs along with research will lead to a great essay and discussion.

The audience I am writing to are the numerous medical and graduate schools who are affected and take in to account affirmative action and quota.  This audience will be great professors and many distinguished men and women.  This will be a harder audience to give a topic to rather than people of youth.

The purpose of my topic is to discuss how affirmative action is wrong.  People should be admitted to schools based solely on academic achievement and potential.  Race and sex should not be taken into account.

The genre I have chosen is an analysis because it will be good to see the different viewpoints on the subject so all bias will be eliminated.  Also, it is good to find real life accounts of a topic that is so opinionated. Facts speak louder than personal opinion sometimes.

The context of my topic is yesterday, today, and tomorrow.  Racism is a subject that is omnipresent and impossible to avoid.  Being in the south is also an important part of the context of the discussion because I feel that racism is a more personal topic when someone is raised below the Mason-Dixon line.  Also, the current events of quotas in school, people being hired according to race, affirmative action, and the racism surrounding the presidential election will all lend a large part to the context of the discussion.  The audience will want to hear about current events as well personal opinions and experiences, so my argument and discussion will be aided by the above topics in the news today.  The context will also contain much about my personal background because it is important to mention that I have lived in the same region as my audience and experienced some of the same things.  Overall, I think the location and the topic of racism being discussed helps my context and argument the most.

Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe)

In project one I wrote about the famous Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade. But more specifically I wrote about who Jane Roe was and why she sought an abortion. In researching the paper, I found that many aspects of the case and Roe’s life were not at all people expect. Jane Roe’s real name is Norma McCorvey. She went by the alias Jane Roe to keep her identity a secret for many reasons. She actually never had an abortion; she gave her baby up for adoption after giving birth. And many years after she finally revealed her true identity, she openly changed her opinion on the abortion issue. She became pro-life. This article linked below is an article that sums up Norma McCorvey’s life.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=21598

After reading this article did you find any information that you did not know before? Did you find any of the story ironic? And does it mean anything that the one person that is forever linked to the pro-choice movement actually disagrees with that position now?

Doctor loses license in live birth abortion.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/02/06/florida.abortion/index.html

"What this is about is right and wrong and making a statement, making sure it doesn't happen to other young women." said by Tom Pennekamp, her attorney. Abortion has been an ongoing debate between right and wrong. There is no actual "right" answer that science nor religion can prove about abortion. However, when a child is born there is no question. All can agree that having to witness your newborn child killed is inhumane. Some will argue that abortion is no different to this disaster;the actual sacrifice of an individual both have in common but i believe having a front row seat to your child's death is far worse. What Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacques Renelique did is undeniably wrong and consequences should be given; but to what extent and to which doom should he face is questionable. The fight between when a child should be considered "alive" is a present debate and the only logic that suits either advocate is that when the baby is born he/she is definitely alive. And when you kill a live human being that is murder. The fact that this was a death from an intended abortion puts a twist on things. Should this have affect on how we view this information or how we act on it? Or is this no different then if she was to have the proper procedure? It's obvious Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacques Renelique should lose his license but is that all he should be sentenced? Killing the baby right after birth was wrong and in any other case would be considered murder but I'm not sure if that applies here. I do believe there is a difference between having an abortion and having a baby then it being thrown away. In his defense the baby was to die anyway but there is no denying that what he did is kill a live human, which is murder. Put yourself in Sycloria's shoes, how would you feel?
What do you feel this doctor's right punishment is?
Is this situation any different from a usual abortion procedure?
Is you're stance on the abortion debate even relevant when reading this article?

Televisions/Video games effects on Children

Brittany Hudgins
March 2, 2009
Proposal 2

Writer: My personal experiences will affect my writing because I am a parent. My age will affect my writing because most people have more than one television in their home. Also I grew up in the age of technology and it is considered uncommon to not have a TV or gaming system in your home.

Purpose: To persuade parents that what they allow their children to watch on television or the video games they all their children to play may affect them in a negative way. However, parents can somewhat the effects that television has on their children.

1. Negative Effects
A. Physical Development-

1. Children spend more time watching television and less time being active. May become couch potatoes-eat junk food and watch TV=gain weight.
2. Promotes unhealthy eating habits
3. Promotes smoking and alcohol use

B. Social Development

1. Violent aggressive shows lead to violent aggressive behavior.
2. Create a False sense or reality
3. Children mimic the actions of their favorite TV characters
4. Teaches children violence is an acceptable way to solve problems.

C. Steps that have been taken to counteract the effects by organizations and the
Government

1. Telecommunication Act of 1996- All TVs 13 inches and larger sold in the US, must contain a v-chip. The v-chip allows parents to block undesirable programming.
2. TV rating system-helps parents establish guidelines for their child/childrens TV viewing, but television networks rate the programs.
3. Entertainment Software Rating Board
-Rating symbols- age appropriateness for game
-Contents descriptors- indicates elements in the games that may be of interest or concern

D. Steps parents can take to counteract the effects

1. Participate- Watch television with your children. Talk about the commercials and shows that are viewed. Children will have a better understanding of what they view and how to interpret the information being viewed. Also parents are able to know what exactly children are viewing and whether or not the program is appropriate for their child/children.
2. Set limits- They can watch TV or play video games at specified timed during they day or for so many hours a day. Maybe no television until after homework is finish or no TV when eating dinner.
3. Monitor- Know what programs your children are watching or games your children are playing.
4. Other activities
-outdoor play
Sandbox
Parks
-play dates
-extra curricular activities
Dance
Sports
-Reading

Genre: I would like to write a persuasive essay that will persuade parents to at least have a more active role in monitoring what their children watch on television and the video games they play. Lack of involvement on the parent’s part could negatively affect their children.

Do you think I have focused too much on the negative effects and not enough on the positive effects television/games has on children?
Do you think I should address an audience other than parents?

Proposal #2 - LGBT rights

My topic for the second project will be on the same issue of LGBT rights, but to narrow in on a specific idea, I am still unsure about. Last project I focused on the ENDA – employment non-discrimination act in Louisiana. I want to take a different approach, maybe more creative on how to inform the nation on how critical these rights are for the LGBT community. I also may want to inform how much of an impact these rights will have on the community, and how not having them affects each person in some way.

My purpose/stance will be to inform and enlighten everyone to the real issues these rights have an impact on not only the LGBT community, but everyone across the country as well. I would love to influence my audience to take a stand and maybe even donate their time to helping others become informed and a little more open about the many conflicting issues. I think my main purpose this time is to motivate/persuade.

My audience this time will be a little different. I plan to aim my writing more towards the younger generation this time, like around the ages of late teens to late 20's. I think this would be a good target audience to engage in because this age group is still developing who they are and are going to be in their later years in life. Putting the ideas in their head's may motivate them more to take action or even get involved in some kind of way.

The context of my writing is definitely affected by the person I am and how I grew up. My age is a contributing factor because I am still exploring my surroundings and finding out who I am truly and what I believe in without the influence of my family/peers. I am not old in age, but I feel old in my years, just because I feel like I've experienced many things at my age. That alone has an impact on my context. The fact that LGBT rights are such a big issue is also another point that can affect my writing and the way I think. With so much change brought to the country in let alone the past two years, I think now more than ever is a perfect time to attack the issue. It's just the way I present it needs to be creative and not attacking those who choose to disagree.

The genre of my next writing will be more creative. I want to try to create an emblem or a conundrum, and then explain the reason or significance behind it. I think this would be a good idea will the targeted audience because like the saying goes a picture says a thousand words, that, and well besides the fact that essays and such get boring to read. I always remember those commercials or ads about living above the influence as well as the quit smoking ads, and they always have an impact on me even if it's after the fact of looking at it. I want my actual project to do the work instead of having my background writing having to leave the impact.

**What do you guys think (as young adults) would be a good specific topic to focus in on the rights of LBGT?

**In this time of progress, what are your opinions of the issue, and what do you think I need to take into consideration when trying to motivate/persuade?

Recession= Marijuana Legalization & Lowering Drinking Age

Photobucket

There is an ongoing trend today amongst legislators and politicians; they are now starting to look realistically at the idea of the legalization and taxation of marijuana. In Boulder, Colorado, because of the scarcity of tax funds and in an effort to save money, legislators there are playing with the idea of reducing the drinking age from 21. The article says that certain state officials wish to spend their budget funds more "productively"- like making sure that their police officers are more protected instead of using their funds on "keeping pot smokers in prison." According to the article, 2/3's of people imprisoned annually are there for either failing their drug test or missing a meeting with their parole officer.

1. Where would you rather have your tax dollars spent - building new roads and highways, or keeping harmless "pot heads" imprisoned?

2. Do you think that if marijuana did become legal in California - marijuana is Cali.'s largest cash crop - other states should/will follow?

*read the article and please post your opinions, it's a pretty interesting topic. also, just because this is my topic for my blog post please don't think that I'm a pot head. : )

Blog Post #2- Louisiana Wetlands

For project one I wrote about the Louisiana wetlands and the alarming rate in which they are disappearing. Throughout my paper, I asked the reader what can be done to restore the wetlands. After focusing on several points of what can be done in project one, I plan to explore even more on what exactly can be done in project two. After reading many articles covering this topic I found a reoccurring proposal-purposely diverting the natural path of the Mississippi River. "This will be one of the great engineering challenges of the 21st century-on the order of the Channel Tunnel or the Three Gorges Dam," said Denise J. Reed, a scientist at the University of New Orleans who has focused on the river.
The proposal is not completely finalized but so far is calls for allowing the Mississippi to flow out of its levees in more than a dozen places throughout Louisiana. This would compose at least seven new waterways that would carry a volume of water comparable to the Potomac River. In fact, at least three of those waterways would maneuver much faster than the Potomac (Whoriskey). These deviations would channel the Mississippi and its land-enhancing sediment to the eroding coastal areas. The proposal also calls for mechanically pumping sediment in order to rebuild marshes and barrier islands as well as closing shipping to the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. According to Peter Whoriskey, the writer of the article, some scientists stated that this navigation channel acted as a "superhighway" for storm surge caused by Hurricane Katrina.
After reading about the magnitude of this proposal, I find it hard to be either pro or con. A part of me feels that it may be too risky to tamper with the wetlands we have left but I also know that something needs to be done fast and this could be the answer we've all been waiting for.

http://www.lexisnexis.com.libezp.lib.lsu.edu/us/lnacademic/results/docview/docview.do?docLinkInd=true&risb=21_T5927825439&format=GNBFI&sort=RELEVANCE&startDocNo=1&resultsUrlKey=29_T5927782158&cisb=22_T5927825442&treeMax=true&treeWidth=0&csi=8075&docNo=1
How do you feel about it? Do you think that this should be tested or trying to find another more "safe" way is the better answer?

Some may argue that whatever necessary risks should be taken because of the devastated state the wetlands are in and now, it is a matter of time. Do you agree?

Project 2, Music in Education- Rough Draft Proposal

For our previous project, I chose to write a letter addressing why music is vital to a good education.  My letter was geared towards the parents of my county back home in the hopes that I would be able to reach them on a personal level, having been through the school and music programs in that county myself.  The main points of the pervious paper all addressed how music develops academically.  For this paper, I want to write about how music helps students develop in other ways aside from good test scores.  I watched this interview and the way it spoke of music assisting people to developing in all fields (not just academics) made me want to focus on that idea for Project 2.  link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA6p1I9GkX0&feature=related

Proposal:

Writer- Hopefully I will be able to address this topic of development through music on a personal, but scientific level.

Audience- The audience for this project will be more open than my last paper.  I want this essay to be a reflexive analysis so that I can share my views, but have the essay be more of an analysis rather than persuasion or anecdotes.

Purpose-  To show that not only does music help with the critical thinking needed for school work, but it helps with life skills, personal development, and in many cases, can help a student finally become engaged in his school work.  The youtube video develops on this idea of needing something to get students excited about school and often this needed catalyst is music.  I also want to speak on how people who may not be the best on paper can turn into brilliant leaders because of what music has taught them.

Topic- I’m having trouble narrowing in on a specific topic.  I think I want my focus to be on how music causes humans to behave, act, and see things differently.

Genre- reflexive analysis

·         *Can you envision reading an entire essay based on my topic?  Does it need to be narrower?

·        *  Should I relate my topic more to a social justice issue or does it have enough substance as it is?

The Louisiana Wetlands- Proposal Draft

For my first project I focused mainly on explaining and defining the problems that surround Louisiana's significant land loss. In my second project, I want to focus more on convincing people why we should spend more money on this restoration. Here is a draft of my proposal:

My topic this time around will focus more on how our wetlands can help protect us from deadly gulf storms if properly restored. My purpose is to try to convince people that more money should be spent on wetland restoration rather than the levee systems. It has been proven that over the long term, wetlands are more useful in hurricane protection because they can replenish themselves over time while levees tend to sink. We are currently spending billions of dollars on these levee systems and New Orleans is still experiencing major flooding from hurricanes. If a portion of this money was devoted to our coastal restoration we could rebuild our wetlands and they would serve as a huge buffer to incoming flood waters. My audience will be Louisiana senators/representatives who have control over how a lot of the state's money is spent. the sooner they can be convinced the sooner we can being to get the funds we need to start replenishing our coast. The genre I will be writing in is a reflexive analysis. The reason for this is because I want to state my position of how I think we should go about fixing this problem and why it's important to me. There are many disagreements surrounding the issue of how the money should be spent and I want to argue that by putting more towards our coastal reconstruction we will ultimately save money and better protect our wetlands.

Do you think the audience is too broad/undefined?

Is there another genre that would fit better with what I am proposing?

How Safe Are Our Children?

There is new trend arising among well-educated, wealthy families; these families are opting out of routinely scheduled vaccinations. Why? Those who believe in the dangers of vaccines argue that the additives and preservatives in these products, including formaldehyde, lead, and aluminum, are contributing factors in such childhood illnesses as juvenile diabetes, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), asthma, ADHD and a certain form of Autism Spectrum Disorders, “regressive autism”. The preservative thimerosal mentioned in the clip by Robert Kennedy, Jr. is a form of mercury. This additive had been banned by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 but has continued to be used in influenza vaccines today.

Those who do decide to opt out of vaccinations are not met receptively by those in the medical profession and the Center for Disease Control. In extreme cases it has been shown that when a parent chooses to limit or opt out of the vaccination schedule, official threats of medical neglect charges are brought forth. Parents are thrown out of their doctors’ offices and children have been refused entry into school. It is a common misconception that vaccines are required for school entry. In actuality vaccines may be “mandated” by the CDC, but are not “legally required” if proper exemption protocol is made.

1. Why do you think parents are scrutinized for opting out of routine vaccination even after they have done the research and decided immunization is too risky?

2. Why do you believe the preservatives in vaccines have not been as tightly regulated as the food we feed our children, despite of the fact that vaccines are injected directly into the blood stream?

3. For what reason would you CHOOSE TO vaccinate your child(ren) or future child(ren)?

blog post #2 due 3 Mar

-blog post due 3 Mar-

I encourage you to make this assignment useful to you; link it to your project! With that in mind, here are three options for your post (choose one! don't do all three!)

1) Post an article + response like before, but choose an article that you plan to use as part of your research.
2) Post a summary of project #1, so you can get feedback from the class that will help you revise.
3) Post a draft of proposal #2, so that you force yourself to write it early and get some feedback.

No matter what you do, be sure to write a specific question or two at the end for classmates to respond to. Also, keep your audience in mind: since we're not required to respond to all posts, you'll have to catch our attention and engage us as readers if you want responses!

-3 responses- due 5 Mar

Make these useful as well!
Read your classmates' posts with an eye toward what they do particularly well that you can learn from. Read them with an analytic eye so you can spot writerly moves that they're making, and think about whether those moves might be worth adding to your own repertoire.

midterm survey and some free points for you. deadline: Friday 27 Feb

Hi everyone, and happy-almost-Mardi Gras!

I mentioned in class on Thursday that I'd like you to complete a survey about our class. I will use it to plan the rest of the semester, so the more feedback you give me, the more likely the class is to meet your needs. I hope you'll share your earnest thoughts with me here.

I estimate that the survey will take you 20 minutes, maximum.

It is anonymous, so there will be no retribution for criticism. =) On the contrary: please be as liberal in your critique as you are in your praise. Both are extremely helpful.

Since it's anonymous, I can't tell whether you individually completed it, so here's how I'll do the bonus: if I get the same # of responses as there are students in the class before one week from today (Friday, 27 Feb), everyone will get one free participation/assignment grade. So...go, team!

I've been looking over your projects, and I have to say, I'm as impressed with your work on them as I have been with your comments and assignments for class. Y'all are some brilliant people, and I'm not saying that just to put you in a good mood before you do the survey...

Optional Viewing...follow up on our discussion of the Declaration of Independence

Michael Eric Dyson, a renowned scholar who's currently teaching at Georgetown, here examines the links between "the American Dream," Martin Luther King's "I have a dream," and Langston Hughes' "What happens to a dream deferred?"

He looks at the same apparent contradictions in the Declaration of Independence that many of you noticed, and offers a really hopeful answer.

No Dreams Deferred? Interesting and similar to some of our conclusions, he notes "the innate flexibility" of that document.

The Gay Marriage Debate. due 12 Feb

Your task is to evaluate FOUR of the following sources by answering these questions in depth. You do not have to share your personal opinion about the issue; instead, focus on the texts and how they affect you (which, of course, might be related to your opinion, but not necessarily).
  1. What is the rhetorical situation (audience, purpose, writer, topic, genre, context--note that the topic is the same for all of them, and the context is the same for all but #3).
  2. As a reader/viewer, what does it make you think, do or feel? Be honest and describe it in depth...this will help you identify with your own audience when you're writing.
  3. How credible is this source? What, specifically, leads you to this conclusion? How does the issue of credibility impact your reaction to it (as described in #2)?
No need to post your evaluation on the blog; bring it to class with you instead. We will discuss your thoughts and I will collect it for a grade.

HATE CRIMES! (ALIVE & GROWING)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIP2LbpS10s&feature=related

What could possess someone to do something that cruel to someone? This is a question that I often ask myself when I see victim of a hate crime. A hate crime is classified as a violent act against a person due to race, religion, color, or origin. Hate crimes bestow a perception that certain crowds are not welcomed in certain societies. As a result, studies indicate that hate crimes emerge to have more serious psychological effects on the victims and the communities they represent than do other crimes. In 2006, there were more than 7,000 known offenders of hate crimes. The top offenders were involved with hate crimes associated with race, religion, and sexual orientation. However, out of the top three hate crimes, race was the highest.

The video link that I have posted consists of an interview with a young woman who was brutally tortured. Megan Williams is a young lady that was kidnapped, tortured, and sexually assaulted by six white individuals for almost a week. The things done to Megan were unforgettable and inhuman.

Why do you believe that race is the highest hate crime?

What penalty should the defendant(s) receive for committing a hate crime?

What are your thoughts, feelings, reactions towards Megan’s video?

Reading Response #3: Thoreau, "Civil Disobedience." Due 27 Jan.

You can do the usual reading response to Thoreau if you like (see the guidelines on the sidebar to the right)-->
Or if you want to connect it to a current issue, you can do something a little bit different:

After reading Thoreau, watch this clip from Israeli television. If you're not aware of the war that's happening there at the moment, you might want to read the Wikipedia article for a brief overview. It's important stuff that the U.S. is very much involved in, so it's worth knowing.

  • With what parts of Thoreau's thought do you agree and disagree?
  • Are these Israeli "refuseniks" acting in the spirit of Thoreau?
  • Is there a similar movement in the spirit of "Civil Disobedience" that you know of or could imagine in the present-day United States? In the past?

Homelessness in America

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3J6byxk02I&feature=related

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4305.htm

When many people think homeless, they think bums, drunks, and people that are just to lazy to work. Most of that is far from reality. By definition, a person who is homeless is an individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. Homelessness is without a doubt an on going problem that we face in our society. Lack of affordable housing, lack of available jobs, mental illness, and a small percentage who are fighting drug or alcohol dependence are among the causes here in the United States. The more I researched it the more eye dropping the numbers were to me. Here we are one of the richest countries in the world, and on a given year we have 3.5 million people experiencing homelessness. That is an alarming statistic to me that I feel like our society needs to work to fix. Creating more jobs will be a key issue that our new President will have to face over the next four years, but if he can fulfill his promise then we should be able to help fight the homelessness here in America.

What can we do to help fight this problem in our society?

Obama weakening military protocol?

(posted by KNick)

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/21/guantanamo.hearings/index.html

First day on the job and many Americans are upset with our new Mr.
President. Well, who can blame them? I choose this CNN article on the
possible closing of the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba because
it is the first decision he has made as president, and I do not agree
with him. Guantanamo Bay has been home to the most dangerous high- risk
terrorist since the attack on 9/11. These people are the ones that
plotted to kill thousands of innocent Americans because they did not
like us.

Another reason I choose this article is because it also talks about
Obama trying to end rough interrogations. In a perfect world, people
would not lie, and always tell the truth when asked a question. But this
is not a perfect world. Terrorists do not tell their information with a
simple please and thank you. I am not an advocate of physically abusing
a person to the point of death, but sometimes a person needs to be
roughed up a little to get the point and cooperate.

My question is, what does Obama plan to do with these high-risk
prisoners? Does he want to bring them into the borders of the United
States?

Do you agree with him? Do you disagree? Explain.

Louisiana Wetlands: A Resource at Risk

(posted by Lori C)

http://www.lacoast.gov/

http://marine.usgs.gov/fact-sheets/LAwetlands/lawetlands.html

Louisiana Wetlands: A Resource at Risk

The coastal Louisiana wetlands are one of the most beneficial wetlands in the United States. Not only can the economy be significantly supported by these swamps and marshes, but other things such as recreational and agricultural interests make up a large part of what numerous animals call home. Today, the Louisiana wetlands loss is the greatest in the Nation. Approximately half of the United States’ original coastal habitats have perished over the past two-hundred years. The Louisiana coast itself represents forty percent of the wetlands in the mainland United States, as well as eighty percent of the quantity lost. For these reasons, I feel that it is crucial that every effort is being made to save the wetlands. Scientists across the Nation continue to study why Louisiana’s coastline is fading away, while others are asking how it can be fixed and who exactly should decide.

Whether you are from Louisiana or not, do you feel that these wetlands are a beneficial resource needed to be saved or a lost cause?

Do you find it too much of a risk to continue to put more money into trying to fix and protect the wetlands even though they are extremely profitable?

I have always thought that the Louisiana wetlands to be a major point in enviromental injustice that affects citizens across the country in one way or another, do you agree?

Bullying in Cyberspace

Cyber-bullying is defined as repeatedly making fun of another person online or through text messages and emails. Over the past couple of years, cyber-bullying instances have risen. With the media recently focused on the suicide of Megan Meier, I began to do my own research about cyber-bullying. After reading story after story, there was just one question that seemed to stick in my head? What were these parents teaching their children?

Granted, It's wrong to deliberately single out one child and pick on them, but I'm pretty sure we have all experienced at one point in our lives some type of bullying. There is an old adage that says, "I am rubber and you are glue, whatever you say bounces right off of me and sticks back to you." At some point you have to look back at the parents and wonder what did they teach their children?

Cyber-bullying like all bullying is wrong and pointless but my mother always told me whatever doesn't kill you make you stronger. While we are greiving for the thousands of kids who have lost their lives to cyber-bullying, we also should be looking at the parent's parental skills. The basic fundamentals of social interactions we learn from our parents and our family. In order to be that greatly affected, there was some fundamental that wasn't being taught at home--Self-esteem.

Should the parents be accountable for their childrens actions on both ends of the spectrum? Is cyber-bullying just overated? Should there be a different punishment for adults who harrass children and children who harrass children? Is there any effective way to implement cyber-bullying protection?

Gun Control

The Second amendment of the constitution states, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Gun control has been a hot topic over the past couple of decades. There are always people trying to justify that strict gun control or abolishment is necessary, even though our fore fathers mentioned in the Constitution that every citizen has a right to bear arms.

As stated in the article, “The study noted the number of criminals who obtained guns from retail outlets was dwarfed by the number of those who picked up their arms through means other than legal purchases.” I believe that politicians are focusing on gun control in the wrong way. Criminals that want guns will get them any way possible. Law-abiding citizens should be able to purchase any firearms they want as long as a criminal and mental background check is done. The comprehensive study found that   only a small percentage of people used the weapons in a illegal manner, but this was usually due to the guns owner neglecting the safe-keeping of the firearm.

Our newly elected president wants to ban handguns all together, and most recently certain rifles. What good would this do, but keep citizens defenseless against the real criminals that most likely got a gun the illegal way. Would this go against our 2nd amendment?

"Free Software, Free Society"

I think this article was pretty cool, because I personally prefer Macs over PC's and after reading this article it further persuaded me to stick with Macs. This article talks about how with Window's Vista's arrival to the market it basically required people who were going to 'upgrade' to Vista to  "throw their current computer into a landfill and buy a new one." I don't know how aware you guys are with how bad dumping computers into landfills is, but it's terribly terribly bad for the environment and for the people who live near those landfills. So, with that said, just that one reason would already dissuade me to go with Vista. Also, in the article it talks about how limiting programs are on Windows Vista, which only allow you to use them if all your hardware support those certain software restrictions. Another thing, Vista, according to this article, is not only unstable and restriction laden, it also bares constant monitoring - I think we can all do without anymore breach of privacy and our freedom of speech.

Should you allow your computer to limit how you express yourself?

Are Soldiers Citizens?

Please view the following link, as this is a response to the video clip titled MILITARY MEDICAL MISTREATMENT & THE FERES DOCTRINE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l7BObKkb5Q

“When we assumed the Soldier, we did not lay aside the Citizen.”
General George Washington, New York Legislature, 1775.

Years after Dr. King was assassinated during his fight for the equalities of all men, Americans continue to encounter social injustices similar to the injustices that sparked the civil rights movement. Are soldiers citizens? After all, in order to become an American soldier you must first be an American citizen.

The Feres Doctrine of 1950 states that “The United States is not liable under the Federal Tort Claims Act for injuries to members of the armed forces sustained while on active duty… resulting from the negligence of others in the armed forces”. This Doctrine has prevented the family of Sgt. Carmelo Rodriguez, and many others, to seek damages due to the negligence of military personnel, leading to his death. Because these brave men and women are soldiers, they are not afforded the same rights as you and I as American citizens; Civilians have the right to sue the Federal Government for medical malpractice but we deny these rights to the “ultimate” citizen: the citizen who takes on the role refused by the cowardice of others.

Ever since this rule of non-liability, referred to as the Feres Doctrine, Congress has been requested many times to amend the statute to provide for liability, but has always refused to do so. Meanwhile, by case law developed in the lower federal courts; the Federal Tort Claims Act has been interpreted to allow federal prisoners to sue the United States for medical malpractice in prison hospitals. Thus it is that our country awards greater rights to common criminals than it does to members of its armed forces. The continued refusal of the Supreme Court to take responsibility for its illogical reading of the Tort Claims Act in Feres, and of Congress to pass corrective legislation, is a national disgrace. “It is [our] right, it is [our] duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for [the] future security” of our soldiers.

So I ask…

1. Who, if anyone, should be held accountable for such negligence?

2. Does Sgt. Rodriguez’s case meet the exceptions stated in the Feres Doctrine? His diagnosis was made during the physical examination by an armed forces physician prior to active duty.

3. Are soldiers not considered citizens of the United States of America?
