The Louisiana Wetlands- Proposal Draft

For my first project I focused mainly on explaining and defining the problems that surround Louisiana's significant land loss. In my second project, I want to focus more on convincing people why we should spend more money on this restoration. Here is a draft of my proposal:

My topic this time around will focus more on how our wetlands can help protect us from deadly gulf storms if properly restored. My purpose is to try to convince people that more money should be spent on wetland restoration rather than the levee systems. It has been proven that over the long term, wetlands are more useful in hurricane protection because they can replenish themselves over time while levees tend to sink. We are currently spending billions of dollars on these levee systems and New Orleans is still experiencing major flooding from hurricanes. If a portion of this money was devoted to our coastal restoration we could rebuild our wetlands and they would serve as a huge buffer to incoming flood waters. My audience will be Louisiana senators/representatives who have control over how a lot of the state's money is spent. the sooner they can be convinced the sooner we can being to get the funds we need to start replenishing our coast. The genre I will be writing in is a reflexive analysis. The reason for this is because I want to state my position of how I think we should go about fixing this problem and why it's important to me. There are many disagreements surrounding the issue of how the money should be spent and I want to argue that by putting more towards our coastal reconstruction we will ultimately save money and better protect our wetlands.

Do you think the audience is too broad/undefined?

Is there another genre that would fit better with what I am proposing?

  1. possibly useful in figuring out where specific members of your proposed audience currently stand (looks like not all of them will need convincing. You'll want to find out about, and then appeal to the values of the public figures who DO need convincing) http://lacoastpost.com/blog/?p=2317

  2. I think your audience definitely works for the purpose of your paper. You are looking to inform people on the necessities of spending more money on wetlands and the key people who could actually make that happen are our state representatives. As I was reading your proposal, I was hoping that you would include that if we could only spend a little more money on restoring our wetlands now, it would save us money in the future. I think that is a very important point, especially with how unsteady our economy is. By showing people what they have to gain and save from spending time and money on our wetlands now, you show them how possible this goal of saving the wetlands is. I like your proposal and think it will work well!
