Project 2- Proposal

Project 2 was in the format of a magazine article and focused on the scientific aspects of how beneficial music education is.  For this project, I want to approach music in a more personal way.  Hopefully this proposal correlates with that idea:

Topic:  After doing some research, I have decided to write my third essay on how music changes people’s lives.  It will be different from my previous essays in that it will include personal narratives (not my own) and less of science and statistics.  I will be speaking less of how music is beneficial in education and more of how music affects people’s lives.

Writer: While my personal story with music is not how it saved me from a dark time, music has indeed changed the direction my life has taken.  Without it, I have no idea of the person I would be and music has helped me in my life and I know music affects others as well.

Audience:  The audience for this paper will be broad.  Anyone who wants to read about my topic is welcomed to.

Purpose:  To show people how music plays such a vital role in everyday life and hopefully inspire people to participate in the arts, whether it is pursuing instruction in music or simply attending local concerts.

Genre: I’m not really sure of the specific genre of this essay.  It will probably be in the realm of a narrative.  I might try and use “characters” (people that I have researched about and seen how music changed their lives).  It might be a narrative where I am simply an observer into my subjects (the characters from the previous sentence).  I’m not quite sure yet.

Questions:

Is there another genre that you think might work for this?

Do you think it is too idealistic to believe I can write a whole paper on people’s individual experiences with music? Is it too unrealistic?

  1. I really like the idea of a narrative, but maybe you could add a different spin to it. Maybe tell an entire story, and then in the closing part the reader discovers it was the story of Ray Charles, or something. Knowing who the person is might help magnify the issue to readers. Maybe you could include a few smaller narratives, each with a surprising, famous subject.
No matter who your characters are, I think that a narrative has the potential to evoke a lot of emotion and attention for this cause. Music is a very personal and intimate thing.

  3. The narrative essay sounds like it would be a good route to take for this project. They usually tend to be interesting and easy to read. I really like the topic that you chose because I think that it is very realistic that music affects everyday life. Maybe you could even interview people on how they use music in their life because it's different for many. For example, I enjoy music that has lyrics that reach out to me. I'm one of those people whose favorite song relates to them. Others use music to express themselves, or to pass the time, or to de-stress. I think if you decided to interview people, you'd be surprised how many people are affected by music differently.

  4. I like the idea of a narrative essay. I also think that after really researching and learning how music affects somebody else's life and not your own, a reflection essay might work nicely as well. I really like your idea of finding people who have been greatly impacted by music throughout their lives and I absolutely think that you can write an entire essay on people's personal experience with music. I think the key is to find really fascinating people who have been through a lot in their lives and have exciting stories on how music always helped them get back on their feet. This way you could only choose two or three people to write about. If not, more individuals means various experiences which means more stories which will definitely keep your readers intrigued.
