Writer: I am twenty years old and I have grown up surrounded by doctors and the issue of racism and reverse discrimination. This allows me to couple my personal experience with research.
Audience: I am writing to the heads of major higher education institutions that may or may not have been in a legal debate over "Affirmative Action".
Purpose: My purpose is to provide satire that will show how ridiculous some serious subjects can be. Also, I want the people in charge to be able to laugh at themselves and take a step back from their argument.
Genre: I have chosen to a parody and satire but this is still up for debate.
Context: The context will be in today's schools in today's society. This subject is very much alive today.
Do you think I can pull of a parody of "Affirmative Action" without offending anybody?
I think you could pull off a parody. I think it's a good way to go because like you said it will let them take a step back and laugh at themselves for taking such ridiculous subjects and blowing them out of proportion. I think as long as it is obvious that you are writing a parody for the essay, I don't think you will offend anyone. However you don't have to make it obvious; only if you really don't want to offend anyone. Maybe even making it harsh will keep them reading or more focused on the article and how badly it upsets them. That would be comical in itself.
ReplyDeleteI also believe you could do a parody. I have always said that it takes somebody to say something outrageous for others to actually stop and take time out of their day to look/listen to what they are saying. I also think your audience will work very well with a satire piece because the people who often have a hard time changing their ways, admitting their wrong, and especially laughing at themselves are the "head honcho" type of people. Others may see them and their argument as ridiculous so maybe this is what is needed for them to finally step back and look at themselves so they can see it as well.
ReplyDeleteI do think that you can pull off a parody. If you are worried that the audience will be offended by some of your ideas and suggestions, just be careful of what you put in your argument and how things are worded. Also, remember that sarcasm sometimes comes off as offensive to those with a poor sense of humor so you just can't please everybody! All in all, i think this is a good idea. I wrote a satire for my project #2 and I really enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteI also think you can pull off a parody for this topic. I understand what you mean about offending anyone or saying the wrong thing, so just be cautious of when you draw the line. Personally, I've been hearing alot about this issue through friends and relatives,so I'm kind of tired of hearing the complaining from them. Therefore, I would really enjoy a parody and a humor twist to it! I feel it would 'lighten' things up a bit. I think it could be a great project!
ReplyDeleteI am 100% for a parody. A parody is a great way to bring light to an important issue without being to intense and serious. A parody will actually make your reader want to read even more, because the reader will be entertained. Don’t worry about offending anyone, because you can’t please everyone. There will always be someone that dislikes something, or someone that gets offended for a petty reason. A parody would fit your topic “racism” very good, because it’s a very sensitive subject, and a parody could also be an eye-opener to someone. You shouldn’t have any doubts about doing a parody, I think that it’s an excellent idea and so do the others that have commented on your post!!!
