The topic of my discussion is racism and how it has affected society in the past, present, and future.
I, the writer, am a twenty year old male who has grown in up in a wealthy, conservative family. We went to church every Sunday, and my Christian faith is still an important part in my life today. I attended public schools until I reached middle school where I began to attend a prominent private school. After listing these traits, it may seem that racism would not even be a problem for me, but growing up in the south in Chattanooga, Tennessee has exposed me to many forms of racism. I have witnessed racism pertaining to both sex and race on a broad level and a very close, personal level. Also, I have seen that racism is not one-sided, but rather it can be used to have great effect toward both sides. My experience pertains to people on a personal level and a scholastic level concerning my family members. I also plan to research how racism has had an effect on employees and businesses nationwide. I feel like my personal experiences and beliefs along with research will lead to a great essay and discussion.
The audience I am writing to are the numerous medical and graduate schools who are affected and take in to account affirmative action and quota. This audience will be great professors and many distinguished men and women. This will be a harder audience to give a topic to rather than people of youth.
The purpose of my topic is to discuss how affirmative action is wrong. People should be admitted to schools based solely on academic achievement and potential. Race and sex should not be taken into account.
The genre I have chosen is an analysis because it will be good to see the different viewpoints on the subject so all bias will be eliminated. Also, it is good to find real life accounts of a topic that is so opinionated. Facts speak louder than personal opinion sometimes.
The context of my topic is yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Racism is a subject that is omnipresent and impossible to avoid. Being in the south is also an important part of the context of the discussion because I feel that racism is a more personal topic when someone is raised below the Mason-Dixon line. Also, the current events of quotas in school, people being hired according to race, affirmative action, and the racism surrounding the presidential election will all lend a large part to the context of the discussion. The audience will want to hear about current events as well personal opinions and experiences, so my argument and discussion will be aided by the above topics in the news today. The context will also contain much about my personal background because it is important to mention that I have lived in the same region as my audience and experienced some of the same things. Overall, I think the location and the topic of racism being discussed helps my context and argument the most.
I think your paper will turn out nicely. The context of your paper in relation to where you were raised will allow your paper to have a different 'angle' than say someone writing about racism and affirmative action who has never witnessed racism first hand. Your audience, I feel, is a good choice, it's pretty narrow. Also, because you have personal experience with this topic your paper can include some good insight.
