Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe)

In project one I wrote about the famous Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade. But more specifically I wrote about who Jane Roe was and why she sought an abortion. In researching the paper, I found that many aspects of the case and Roe’s life were not at all people expect. Jane Roe’s real name is Norma McCorvey. She went by the alias Jane Roe to keep her identity a secret for many reasons. She actually never had an abortion; she gave her baby up for adoption after giving birth. And many years after she finally revealed her true identity, she openly changed her opinion on the abortion issue. She became pro-life. This article linked below is an article that sums up Norma McCorvey’s life.

After reading this article did you find any information that you did not know before? Did you find any of the story ironic? And does it mean anything that the one person that is forever linked to the pro-choice movement actually disagrees with that position now?

  1. This entire article had me in shock! Honestly, I was not aware of majority of the information contained in this article. When the Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade is brought up, I think about a woman who had an abortion and was criticized for it. I had no clue that there was no abortion at all. Other facts that were astonishing are her depression and homosexuality. Her false story about her being raped did not surprise me, because she was so desperate to have an abortion. I think that this story was ironic because the case was about a woman who wanted an abortion but she is now anti-abortion.

  2. I find it completely bizarre that the woman who helped pass the law to let abortion be legal is now against it. All in all i think her experience with the case is responsible for her change in thought. With an issue this controversial it is hard to have your mind set on one side of the debate. It was shocking to find out she had never had a abortion and had only considered the option. I didn't understand how she said she was "used" when no one made her do anything. Yes, she does say how she wasn't well educated and she was uncertain of what to do, but when it comes to you and your child i think you need to stand up for what YOU think is right for you; because in the end, you're the one effected. And in this case a law was created, you can not be defeated by the ways of the world you must stand for what your believe. That being said regardless of everything as long as she as found her common ground on the situation and is happy now, that is what counts.
