Blog #2, Career Women Face Less Money, Less Marriage

http://abcnews.go.com/Business/CareerManagement/Story?id=2395758&page=1

The article I chose is regarding the wage gap among men and women. In one part it said that women make 77 ¢ for every dollar that a man makes. Women over the age of 25 with bachelor's degrees make approximately $6000 more than the men who have simply just graduated from high school($42,173 for the women, $36, 372 for the men), compared to those men who are of the same age with a bachelor's degree that make $60,071 salary. Obviously graduating from college is beneficial in a situation like this, but it also seems that being male is just as beneficial. A man who isn't even nearly as educated as a woman graduated from college can make almost the same amount as she, and when he does have that degree, he makes a lot more. It also says in this article that some believe that "you shouldn't marry a career woman" because most marriages that contain a career woman end in divorce. Contradicting this statement was Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority, saying that research shows that women who do earn money in the family have more stable marriages than the ones that don't.

Do you think that it is unfair that men typically earn more money than women? Why do you think that men do often times make more money than women?

Do you agree or disagree when they say that marriages with a career woman often fail? Why or why not?

  1. I find it completely unfair that men earn higher wages than women because salary should be judged on potential and skill, not sex. My sister is the most brilliant girl I know, so I know for a fact that people who say that women are not as capable as men are ignorant. Also, I think that the marriage of a man and a career woman would work better because the couple can relate to each other with many problems at work that could otherwise not be addressed.

  2. I think that it is completely unfair that men on average make more wages than women. I think that is one of those things that will come with time because we had to wait to get our right to vote also. But that is something we had to fight for. Maybe this is the same? Feminist groups like the one you mention are doing just that. The statistics are there, most companies have to publicize their pay rates and men usually make more than women.
I also agree with the statement that marriages with a "career women" often fail. That is ridiculous. In today's society women are expected to work. My mom is the major source of income in my house hold. She has been a teacher for forty years now. My dad retired at an early age and works at a recreation playground because he loves working with kids and sports. They have had a great marriage for the last twenty-five or so years.
