For my project, I wrote about gender inequalities in youth sports. This time I want to write a biography on a female sports icon and her struggle to get her name (and sport) out there. I would like to add the history of what sports team in which she participated, and maybe a few other teams as well. The audience of this biography would be young girls everywhere to show them that their dreams can come true and that someone somewhere has already accomplished what they want to achieve. I have not quite decided on the genre yet, but I was thinking of doing a reflection on the athlete's life, from her point of view, and then add in what she thinks about women in athletics today. This part would have to be my opinion in her words, so really it would be my opinion.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a female athlete?
Do you think this could be an effective paper?
Does the genre work well in this situation?
Kathryn--Sarah, Taylor and Amanda S all did a similar thing in project #1 (narratives about an individual used to make a larger point) and all did it well. You might talk to them about this for advice, ideas, what pitfalls to avoid, etc!
ReplyDeleteI think your proposal sounds really good, as for suggestions on female athletes what about the Williams sisters? They would be really easy to find information on and they are huge icons to tennis players and women athletes in general.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of writing a reflection of the athlete’s life from her point of view. I think that specific genre would work very well with what you are trying to accomplish with your paper especially with your audience being young girls. I think this proposal would be a very effective paper. I think that because you never really hear about women in sports. Overall, I think it would be a paper i would enjoy reading. As far as an athlete goes, I would think maybe someone from the WNBA like Lisa Leslie or Sommone Augustus. I say the WNBA because compared to NBA players they get paid next to nothing and they all worked really hard to get to where they are today.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I think about women in sports I always think about Danica Patrick, She is a Indy Car Race driver, she is first female driver to place first place in a Indy Car Race. And she has since attained many firsts in the race car driving world for women. And her popularity is only growing. There are talks of letting her race for a Formula One team in the near future.
ReplyDeleteI think this would be a great subject to touch on because I barely knew of the problem. It will be good to not only bring up this topic to the youth but also to the parents. The parents are the ones who usually put on and create youth sports leagues. The kids are sort of oblivious to the fact of any gender discrimination, so I think the parents would be a great audience for this.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is such a great topic and the audience of young girls seems perfect for it. Because you are directing your essay towards those girls, I know your paper would be extremely effective not only to them but to people close to them like their parents as well. The first female athlete that comes to my mind (that has already been mentioned) is Danica Patrick because she is a female that has dominated a stereotypical male sport. I would use athletes like her who compete in what most think are "male sports." Or use the female athletes that really struggled and had to fight for their way to the top and made it.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a wonderful idea, being an athlete myself. Throughout time, women have come along way with feeling equal in just about everything. Sure there are some people who say that physically alone men are just better, and that may hold some truth. However, when it comes to sports, it not only is how physical you are but also how much heart that athlete has. I think it's a great topic, and I would be totally interested in reading your paper. Athletes love motivation and hearing inspiring words from people who've struggled just as they have. Maybe it will light the fire under some athletes who've lost faith and hope. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteI think the Women Sisters would be good female athletes because they are great tennis players and have their own clothing lines and endorsement deals. So they have succeeded on and off the court. Another one could be Softball pitcher Jenny Finch. She a dominate pitcher in college and on the USA team. She is very pretty so she has gotten numerous modeling contracts. So she also has been a success on and off the field. I really like your topic, but I think the athlete you chose will make or break your essay because the better the choice the more interesting and the better example of what your trying to say.
