For our previous project, I chose to write a letter addressing why music is vital to a good education. My letter was geared towards the parents of my county back home in the hopes that I would be able to reach them on a personal level, having been through the school and music programs in that county myself. The main points of the pervious paper all addressed how music develops academically. For this paper, I want to write about how music helps students develop in other ways aside from good test scores. I watched this interview and the way it spoke of music assisting people to developing in all fields (not just academics) made me want to focus on that idea for Project 2. link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA6p1I9GkX0&feature=related
Writer- Hopefully I will be able to address this topic of development through music on a personal, but scientific level.
Audience- The audience for this project will be more open than my last paper. I want this essay to be a reflexive analysis so that I can share my views, but have the essay be more of an analysis rather than persuasion or anecdotes.
Purpose- To show that not only does music help with the critical thinking needed for school work, but it helps with life skills, personal development, and in many cases, can help a student finally become engaged in his school work. The youtube video develops on this idea of needing something to get students excited about school and often this needed catalyst is music. I also want to speak on how people who may not be the best on paper can turn into brilliant leaders because of what music has taught them.
Topic- I’m having trouble narrowing in on a specific topic. I think I want my focus to be on how music causes humans to behave, act, and see things differently.
Genre- reflexive analysis
· *Can you envision reading an entire essay based on my topic? Does it need to be narrower?
· * Should I relate my topic more to a social justice issue or does it have enough substance as it is?
This may or may not be a useful source specifically for your paper, but it's certainly fascinating and might help you further develop your angle: it's an hour long radio show devoted to explaining and exploring, through science, "musical language:" http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/2006/04/21
