For my 3rd project I want to do something that can get those we encounter on a daily basis involved. Setting a table up in free speech alley may not be the most efficient way, because most just walk past avoiding eye contact.. or at least I do. I was thinking about having like a pamphlet or something with a few topics I discussed in my first 2 projects. My focus is gay rights which from what I have noticed is not something many people address in free speech alley. I was considering using my creativity with something like bracelets that we can sell/give away either one. I think this would draw a little more attention if people get something out of talking to me. On the other hand, I am not sure how I can incorporate writing. Maybe a survey or something simple.
What do you think would be an efficient way to get peoples opinions, survey..etc.?
Do you think the bracelets are a good idea?
and if not, do you have any ideas that would help.
I agree with your comment about free speech alley, most people avoid it unless they are going for a little entertainment. I persoanlly dont like it because the people are way too pushy. I think for a topic like yours it would be bettetr to not force it too much on people because it is a sensitive subject. I think the braclets is a really cool idea, and as far as the writing is concerned you could write about how you came up with the idea or what you hope people will take from it etc.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of bracelets and also agree with your opinion on free speech alley. They way you could incorporate writing is maybe to explain how you went about distributing the bracelets, and the effects the bracelets had. For example, how many people began wearing them and if you think you idea was effective or not. If you sell them you can donate the money to a pro-gay rights group.
ReplyDeleteI love the bracelet idea! And I agree with bseay1's idea of donating the money to a worthy pro-gay rights affiliation. If you are thinking about going the free speech alley route it may be worth giving the bracelets away. Free stuff always gets my attention. Handing them out may make more people interested and make them more willing to listen to what you have to say. Although it wouldn't generate any cash flow it would probably add to people's awareness of gay-rights issues. If you want to get people's opinions on certain gay rights issues then you could give the bracelets away in exchange for their concerns/views written on a slip of paper or something.
ReplyDeleteThe bracelet idea is great. As for writing, a survey is always good, but it couldn't be too long or people might not want to take the time to fill it out. They have sites online (I think) where you can create a survey and then email to your contacts. Maybe that would be a good way to get people's opinions. I also think another good writing strategy would be to make some kind of flyer that you tape the bracelets to. That way, when you hand the bracelets out, you are also giving people important information on your topic. The idea in the post above mine about giving bracelets in exchange for their opinions is a good one too!
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you about free speech alley, I also ignore the people outside…by “listening “ to my ipod! Your idea is a great idea!!! However, if you were to sell the bracelets I don’t know how much people would actually purchase them. Giving them away would probably be better, especially if you plan on implementing a survey along with your giveaway. One way that you can do the surveys, is by placing them in different locations around campus. For example, you can place a basket of bracelets at the front desk of various resident halls, and on the side of the basket you can place the surveys. Just remember to place a sign by your basket with instructions for them to follow.
