HATE CRIMES! (ALIVE & GROWING)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIP2LbpS10s&feature=related

What could possess someone to do something that cruel to someone? This is a question that I often ask myself when I see victim of a hate crime. A hate crime is classified as a violent act against a person due to race, religion, color, or origin. Hate crimes bestow a perception that certain crowds are not welcomed in certain societies. As a result, studies indicate that hate crimes emerge to have more serious psychological effects on the victims and the communities they represent than do other crimes. In 2006, there were more than 7,000 known offenders of hate crimes. The top offenders were involved with hate crimes associated with race, religion, and sexual orientation. However, out of the top three hate crimes, race was the highest.

The video link that I have posted consists of an interview with a young woman who was brutally tortured. Megan Williams is a young lady that was kidnapped, tortured, and sexually assaulted by six white individuals for almost a week. The things done to Megan were unforgettable and inhuman.

Why do you believe that race is the highest hate crime?

What penalty should the defendant(s) receive for committing a hate crime?

What are your thoughts, feelings, reactions towards Megan’s video?

  1. Race related hate crimes are nothing more than pure ignorance. These pain enduring actions that Megan suffered are horrible and inhumane really. In no way shape or form does anyone have the right to ,or should not have the motivation to deliberately inflict pain on an individual because of personal differences. I'm sadden to see that hate crimes still haunt us in this day and age. This is an issue that should have never started much less still be going on in this millennium. I believe one's motivation to endure in hate crimes is due to a cowardly motion to feel superior to a certain race. And if that is the case then they are terribly mislead and need to wake up and realize not only are they hurting others for no reason but in turn hurting themselves. I think hate crimes should have high penalties, maybe jail time will show them the beauty to other race, ethnicities, religions and or beliefs.

  2. Once I watched the video, this case came back to my mind. I remember seeing it on the news and wondering how people could possibly hurt someone, expecially when they have absolutely no basis for their attack. It's hard to say why race is the top cause of hate crimes. I agree with Taylor in that committing such a crime is simply ignorance. Someone who uses race as an excuse to harm another human being has deep problems within themselves. When people sense trouble inside themselves, they can often ignore it and turn to something to make them feel better about themselves. They want to show not only those around them (peers, siblings, etc), but also themselves that they are strong. I also believe that these crimes deserve a long sentence in jail. To commit a hate crime is to have a malicious will towards someone and should have extreme action taken against the offender.

  3. SICK! thats pretty much the only reaction I had towards this video. First of all, to classify this as a "hate crime" is putting it nicely. These individuals clearly have more mental issues than either one of us could fully comprehend. I mean seriously what could drive a person to do such a thing? I am not sure why hate crimes are more likely to result from race. How should these individuals be punished? first of all I think they should judge that on the basis of the crime they have committed. Secondly, the individuals that were accused for torchuring Meagan Williams deserve to be locked up in a 4x4 cell secluded from any interaction. But this is all my personal opinion, you don't have to agree.
